Indonesia ferry disaster leaves over 100 missing in Java Sea

Indonesian search and rescue authorities report that a passenger vessel capsized in the Java Sea during bad weather, killing at least six people and leaving approximately 129 others unaccounted for.[5] The incident occurred early Sunday and has triggered a large-scale operation involving rescue ships, nearby tugboats and other passing vessels, which have so far rescued more than 100 people from the water.[5][14] Rescue teams are contending with rough seas and challenging conditions as they try to locate those still missing, and officials warn that the toll could rise as operations continue.[5][8] The disaster underscores ongoing concerns about maritime safety and vessel overloading in Indonesia’s archipelago, where ferries are a critical but often risky mode of transport.[5]
