The earthquake was initially reported at magnitude 8.0 before being revised downward to 7.6. The US Geological Survey said the epicenter was near Panama’s southern coast, while reports indicated the shaking was felt in neighboring Costa Rica. Tsunami advisories extended to coastal areas including Colombia and Ecuador, making this the most urgent developing international story because of the potential for secondary coastal impacts and disruption across the region.
