Magnitude 7.6 earthquake strikes Panama, triggering tsunami warnings

The earthquake was initially reported as magnitude 8.0 before being downgraded by the U.S. Geological Survey. People evacuated buildings in Panama City, while warnings or advisories affected coastal areas including Colombia and Ecuador; the tremor was also felt in Costa Rica. The event was followed by additional seismic activity, including a magnitude 6.6 aftershock, increasing concern about further shaking and coastal hazards.
