Nepal flash floods leave over 1,400 dead, thousands missing

Nepal is facing a major humanitarian disaster after catastrophic flash floods swept through multiple regions, pushing the death toll beyond 1,400 and leaving more than 6,100 people unaccounted for.[15] Rescue teams have been working in challenging conditions, including at the Upper Trishuli-1 hydropower project tunnel where additional bodies were recovered, highlighting the scale of the destruction to critical infrastructure.[15] The floods have inundated settlements, damaged roads and power projects, and overwhelmed local response capacity, prompting large-scale search and recovery operations and raising concerns about landslides, disease outbreaks, and long-term displacement. Regional observers are treating the disaster as one of the worst flood events in South Asia in recent years, with implications for climate resilience, cross-border river management, and future infrastructure planning.[15]
