Nepal–Tibet floods death toll nears 800, thousands still missing

Authorities in Nepal and China's Tibet region are grappling with a major humanitarian disaster after a Himalayan glacial collapse triggered massive flash floods and landslides across border districts, sweeping away villages, roads and bridges and leaving whole communities cut off.[1][11][8] Recent briefings put the confirmed death toll in the range of roughly 750–770 people, while more than 3,000 remain missing, and officials concede that many of those unaccounted for may be buried under debris or have been washed downstream.[1][8] Rescue teams, including military units and international relief partners, are attempting to reach isolated areas by air and over damaged mountain tracks, but continued heavy rains, unstable slopes and the threat of further landslides have repeatedly forced operations to pause, slowing the search for survivors and the delivery of food, shelter and medical care.[1][11] Nepal has appealed for sustained international assistance, and at least one major donor, the United States, has already announced millions of dollars in emergency support for affected households, underscoring the scale of the crisis and its linkage to broader climate-driven extreme events now hitting vulnerable mountain regions.[1]
