Powerful 7.7 earthquake strikes Panama, triggering tsunami warnings

The earthquake is the most consequential breaking international story in current coverage because of its magnitude, potential tsunami threat and proximity to Panama’s populated areas and the Panama Canal. A subsequent magnitude 6.6 aftershock was also reported, increasing risks for damaged structures and emergency responders.[4] Early reports indicate the canal itself was not affected, but conditions remain developing as authorities verify damage, casualties and coastal hazards.[9]
