US-Iran conflict escalates around key Middle East shipping routes

According to multiple live updates from regional and international outlets, the conflict centered on Iran, Yemen’s Houthi movement and US-aligned Gulf states has entered a dangerous new phase with direct implications for global trade and energy security.[9][12][13][15] Houthi forces have intensified missile and drone barrages on Saudi Arabian cities and oil transit routes, injuring civilians and threatening key export infrastructure near the Bab al-Mandeb and Red Sea chokepoints.[9][13][15] At the same time, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has reportedly intercepted and destroyed advanced MQ-1 drones over the Strait of Hormuz, while talks between Iran and Gulf states on securing shipping in the area have been postponed, deepening uncertainty over maritime safety.[9][12] Regional leaders, including Egypt’s president and Saudi Arabia’s crown prince, have held urgent talks on safeguarding navigation through the Bab al-Mandeb and the Red Sea, as the UN Security Council prepares an emergency session on the spiraling situation.[9] Analysts warn that sustained disruption or miscalculation could quickly translate into higher global energy prices, broader military confrontation, and a wider humanitarian crisis, given simultaneous reports that more than 100,000 people have fled intensified fighting in Yemen.[9][13]
