Catastrophic Himalayan floods leave thousands dead or missing in Nepal

Flash floods in the Himalayan region along the Nepal–Tibet border have become one of the most severe natural disasters of the year, with more than 1,200 confirmed dead and about 5,000 people still missing after torrents of water and debris swept through towns and infrastructure.[4][8] The floods struck a remote border area, destroying homes, roads and power facilities, including a hydropower tunnel where dozens of workers were trapped for days before a small number were dramatically rescued alive.[8][10][11] Nepal now faces the dual challenge of continuing large-scale search-and-rescue operations in difficult mountain terrain while planning the reconstruction of thousands of destroyed homes and critical infrastructure.[8] The scale of the disaster has drawn international attention and assistance, with countries such as Australia deploying disaster and drone specialists to support the search, and global outlets providing live coverage as authorities warn that casualty figures could rise further.[8][4][10][11] Humanitarian agencies are increasingly concerned about access to remote communities, the risk of further landslides and flooding, and the long-term impact on a region already vulnerable to climate-related extremes and limited state capacity.[4][8]
