Fighting in Tigray threatens wider regional conflict

A militia allied with Ethiopia’s federal government said it had captured the main airport serving Mekelle, the capital of Tigray, from opposition forces. Reuters reported that federal troops and allied fighters have launched a rapid counterattack into the region, while analysts describe the escalation as the worst since the previous civil war and warn it could widen beyond Ethiopia’s borders. The airport claim could not be independently verified in the available reporting, and the rapidly changing situation makes casualty and territorial-control assessments uncertain.
