Houthi drone threats push Mecca and Gulf to crisis point

Saudi Arabia is on high alert after a sharp escalation in attacks by Yemen-based Houthi fighters, including drone activity reported near the holy city of Mecca and broader security warnings across key regions such as Jeddah.[1][3][5][11] Saudi authorities have raised security levels and issued advisories as the conflict risks spilling further into areas that host millions of pilgrims annually, making the situation particularly sensitive ahead of future religious gatherings.[1][5][11] The United States has reinforced the seriousness of the threat by maintaining a Level 3 ‘Reconsider Travel’ advisory for Saudi Arabia and a Level 4 ‘Do Not Travel’ warning for the Yemen border, citing Iranian drone and missile attacks, terrorism, and ongoing armed conflict as key risks for foreign nationals and commercial traffic in and around the Strait of Hormuz.[4][7] At the same time, US Central Command reports redirecting over a hundred commercial vessels as part of a broader blockade effort against Iran, underscoring how the Saudi–Houthi confrontation is intertwined with a larger regional struggle involving Iran’s influence and Gulf security.[4] Regional leaders, including Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, have been holding talks focused on maritime navigation and security, signaling concerns that the current spike in hostilities could threaten critical shipping lanes and energy flows from the Gulf.[11]
