Hundreds dead, thousands missing after catastrophic Nepal–Tibet floods

Massive landslides and flash floods have devastated the Himalayan border region between Nepal and China's Tibet area, destroying homes, bridges and critical infrastructure while sweeping away entire villages. Initial tallies from Nepalese authorities and international outlets report death tolls in the many hundreds, with figures ranging from more than 538 to over 675 dead and several thousand still unaccounted for, including hundreds of foreign nationals. The disaster has been linked to a glacier-related collapse high in the mountains, triggering a sudden wall of water and debris that surged down heavily populated valleys, cutting road links, submerging towns and complicating relief efforts. Search-and-rescue teams are racing against time in dangerous terrain and poor weather to reach stranded survivors, restore communications and prevent secondary crises such as disease outbreaks and food shortages, while Nepal signals it may need billions of dollars in reconstruction funds given the scale of the damage to its already fragile economy.
