Hundreds missing after catastrophic Nepal-Tibet flood disaster

Authorities in Nepal and China’s Tibet region are mounting large-scale rescue and recovery efforts after catastrophic floods and landslides tore through communities along their shared Himalayan border, killing hundreds and leaving thousands unaccounted for.[4][11][13] Nepal officials report a death toll approaching 800 with more than 3,000 people missing, including dozens of Americans, while Chinese authorities say at least 16 are dead in Tibet and 261 foreign nationals from 23 countries are missing on the Chinese side of a key border crossing.[4][11][13] Washed-out roads, collapsed bridges and unstable terrain are severely hampering access to affected areas, forcing rescuers to drill tunnels and test the use of drones to deliver aid to isolated survivors who lack food and basic supplies.[2][11][13] The disaster has quickly become a major international crisis, prompting offers of technical assistance and raising urgent questions about infrastructure resilience and climate-related extreme weather risks in one of the world’s most fragile, high-altitude regions.[4][11][13]
