Iran warns of Strait of Hormuz restricted zone amid tensions

According to Iranian officials, Tehran plans in the coming days to announce a new restricted zone stretching from what it describes as the line of a U.S. naval blockade to the Strait of Hormuz and into the Persian Gulf, with any ships attempting to transit the area to be added to Iran’s sanctions list.[5] This follows a period of sharply reduced traffic through the strait, with an average of only about 10 commodity vessels crossing daily over the past 10 days—reported as the lowest level since May—after recent U.S. and Iranian strikes on tankers heightened risks for commercial shipping.[7] Given that the Strait of Hormuz handles a significant share of the world’s seaborne oil and gas exports, any formal restriction or further disruption could have major implications for global energy prices, insurance costs, and supply chains, while also increasing the likelihood of military incidents among regional powers and external navies operating in the area.[5][7]
