Nepal-China floods leave over 900 dead, thousands missing

A massive flood and mudslide disaster that struck Nepal and parts of China last week has escalated into one of the deadliest natural catastrophes of recent years, with more than 900 confirmed deaths and roughly 4,000 people still missing across the affected areas.[1][8] Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reports hundreds of bodies recovered from mudslide-hit zones, while morgues are saturated and many victims remain unidentified, complicating both forensic work and efforts to notify families.[1] In China, authorities are attempting to restore access to a key border crossing destroyed by the disaster, underscoring the scale of infrastructure damage and the disruption of vital trade and transit routes.[8] The human toll is compounded by fears of disease outbreaks, given overcrowded temporary shelters and limited clean water, and by the logistical challenges of reaching remote communities cut off by landslides and washed-out roads.[1][8] Taken together, the cross-border nature of the crisis, its high and still-rising casualty figures, and the strain on health systems and critical infrastructure make this the most urgent global story at the moment.
