The missile was launched Saturday from eastern North Korea and struck a target approximately 1,000 kilometers away in the sea off the country’s east coast, according to KCNA as reported by Reuters. The test is the latest in a series of North Korean weapons launches this year and raises immediate concerns about regional security, military signaling, and possible further responses from South Korea, the United States, and Japan. Available reporting does not indicate that the launch caused casualties or represented an attack on another country.
