Strait of Hormuz vessel hit by projectile, fire breaks out

UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reports that a vessel transiting the strategic Strait of Hormuz has suffered a projectile strike that triggered a fire on board, prompting emergency efforts to evacuate the crew.[10] The extent of the damage to the ship and any resulting pollution in one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints are still under investigation.[10] This incident comes amid escalating friction involving the United States, Iran and regional actors over control and security in the waterway, with Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps officials warning that US vessels entering Tehran’s declared restricted areas would face a response from Iranian forces.[10] The Strait of Hormuz handles a large share of global oil and gas exports, so any attack or disruption there immediately raises concerns over energy security, shipping safety, insurance costs and potential spillover into a wider military confrontation.[10] Regional diplomats, including Turkish and Iranian officials, have recently discussed ways to de-escalate around the Strait and broader Gulf, underscoring how fragile the security environment has become and how a single incident can have worldwide economic and geopolitical repercussions.[3][10]
