Trump tariffs ignite global trade war fears

In a move with far‑reaching economic and geopolitical implications, President Donald Trump has ordered significant new tariffs on goods from Canada, China and Mexico, with rates of 25 percent on Canadian and Mexican imports and 10 percent on Chinese goods, alongside a separate 10 percent rate for Canadian energy products.[10] According to analysis, the tariffs immediately sent U.S. stocks tumbling and prompted declines in major Asian and European indices, underscoring investor concern that the decision could escalate into a broader trade war affecting supply chains, inflation and global growth.[10] The duties come as part of a wider set of U.S. policy shifts, including a freeze on more than $1 billion in military aid to Ukraine pending what the White House describes as sufficient peace efforts by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, highlighting how Washington is simultaneously reshaping its economic and security posture.[10] Economists and policymakers worldwide are now watching for potential retaliatory measures from affected countries, the response of multinational firms reliant on cross‑border trade, and the longer‑term impact on energy markets given the specific targeting of Canadian energy exports.[10]
