The reported strikes mark a significant escalation in long-range attacks against Russian infrastructure and energy assets. European outlets reported fires and heavy smoke in and around St Petersburg, while Russian officials said 126 drones were intercepted in the surrounding region. The attacks followed Russian strikes on multiple Ukrainian regions, which Ukrainian officials said killed civilians and damaged homes and energy infrastructure. The widening exchange raises concerns about further escalation and disruption to fuel and critical infrastructure across both countries.[1][3][8][10]
