US-Iran military clashes raise global oil and security fears

American forces have carried out new attacks on Iranian rocket launch sites on Larak Island in the Gulf, described as the first U.S. strikes on Iranian territory in weeks, after Washington said it was responding to Iranian efforts to deploy fresh naval mines near the Strait of Hormuz.[1][10][12] Iran has in turn fired missiles at U.S.-linked bases in Jordan and used drones against targets in the United Arab Emirates, marking a dangerous tit-for-tat exchange across the region.[1][10] The confrontation is already impacting global markets: oil prices have jumped around 3%, and borrowing costs in both the euro area and Japan have hit multi-year highs as investors fear prolonged disruption to energy supplies and central banks staying in rate-hike mode.[9] Analysts and news outlets list the renewed U.S.-Iran hostilities and Hormuz tensions as the top global story of the day, ahead of other serious developments such as catastrophic floods and rescue operations in Nepal, a deadly ferry disaster off northern Cyprus, and intensifying Russian strikes on Ukraine.[1][5][6][7][13] With shipping queues growing on key routes serving Ukraine and major powers trading threats over energy infrastructure, the risk that a localized clash in the Gulf could evolve into a broader regional or economic crisis is driving the intense international focus on this escalation.[9][13]
