UN Security Council holds emergency Iran nuclear crisis session

According to current reports, the United Nations Security Council gathered in an emergency session to address a rapidly intensifying crisis around Iran’s nuclear activities after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) referred Tehran over violations, opening the door to possible reimposition of UN sanctions.[10] The discussion comes amid an ongoing US–Iran confrontation around the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, where military stand‑offs and reported strikes on oil tankers and bases in Jordan have underscored the risk of direct conflict between the two sides.[4][12] Iran’s threats to restrict or close shipping through Hormuz, through which a significant share of global oil exports passes, have already pushed up oil prices and prompted warnings from multiple governments and analysts about potential shocks to energy markets, trade routes and regional security if diplomacy fails.[10][12] The emergency meeting is therefore being closely watched as a potential turning point for both the nuclear file and the broader US–Iran war dynamic, with permanent Council members weighing sanctions, maritime security measures and possible diplomatic off‑ramps in a highly volatile environment.[10][12]
