US completes Iraq withdrawal, raising fears of a security vacuum

US forces are leaving their last bases in Iraq on Wednesday, marking a major strategic shift in the Middle East after a military presence in which about 4,500 Americans died. Reuters reported that the withdrawal could deepen Iran’s influence, create a security vacuum and provide an opening for the Islamic State to rebuild. The departure is also affecting regional politics and energy markets: Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps urged Americans to vote against President Donald Trump’s congressional allies, while oil prices rose after Trump denied he was prepared to ease sanctions on Iran. The long-term impact will depend on the Iraqi government’s ability to contain militias and jihadist networks without direct US military support.
