US-Iran attacks escalate into major Middle East confrontation

According to multiple outlets, US forces carried out “large and powerful” strikes against Iran’s military infrastructure, including targets near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, and have completed a new wave of operations against Iranian assets.[1][5][15] In response, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has launched ballistic missiles at a US base in Jordan and coordinated major drone attacks targeting Bahrain and other locations, with regional air defenses scrambling to intercept incoming projectiles.[6] Jordan reported intercepting most of the missiles, with a few landing in unpopulated areas, while Kuwait and other Gulf states activated air defense systems against hostile drones.[6] Iranian state media and IRGC statements claim US personnel were killed, allegations Washington has not immediately confirmed, as President Donald Trump warns that further Iranian retaliation will trigger significantly stronger American strikes.[1][6] The confrontation comes on top of earlier US attacks, including reported strikes on Iranian government tankers and broader targeting of Iran’s military, and is unfolding amid wider Middle East realignments, visits by major powers such as China’s Xi Jinping to the region, and sharply rising oil prices as markets factor in heightened risk to Gulf energy supplies.[1][2][4][5][13][15] The situation is widely described as a dangerous inflection point in the Iran war, with analysts warning of spillover across the region and mounting pressure on global diplomacy and energy security.[2][4][13][15]
