EU LEADERSHIP SPLITS OVER REFORM
The strongest Europe-wide story is the growing debate over how to make the EU function more effectively as enlargement, decision-making deadlock, and geopolitical pressure collide. A recent policy proposal backed by Germany’s finance minister has revived the idea of a smaller “Europe of six” or a two-speed core group inside the wider EU, reflecting frustration with paralysis in the 27-member bloc. This makes institutional reform and deeper integration the key theme across EU institutions, geopolitics, and the economy. The issue matters because it affects how Europe responds to security threats, competitiveness, and future enlargement.
