US–Iran strikes escalate, raising fears of wider Gulf war

Multiple outlets report a sharp escalation in the confrontation between the United States and Iran, now involving repeated air and missile strikes, naval incidents, and attacks on bases in several Gulf states.[3][4][7][11][13] US officials say they have carried out heavy strikes on Iranian military equipment and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps sites, while President Donald Trump has publicly threatened further attacks "any time we want," framing the campaign as defending Israel, the Middle East and Western interests.[3][4] Iranian authorities, in turn, report at least 18 people killed and more than 100 injured in the latest US attacks inside Iran, and are accusing Washington of war crimes after a strike near a wedding that left multiple civilians dead and dozens wounded.[3][4][13] The fighting has spilled into the broader Gulf, with Kuwait reporting hostile missile and drone attacks on US-linked targets, and Saudi Arabia alleging an Iranian attack on a Saudi-owned tanker in the Strait of Hormuz that killed crew members, underscoring the risk to one of the world’s most critical energy choke points.[3][7][11] Regional governments are on high alert, NATO and EU leaders are condemning what they call increasingly reckless actions by both Iran and Russia, and the UN Secretary-General has issued a rare warning about mounting civilian casualties and the danger that the US–Iran showdown could ignite a wider regional war.[3][7][10]
